חַבּוּרָה תַּחַת חַבּוּרָה
By David Shalom
Recently, I had people, primarily older single boys, reaching out to me, via WhatsApp and other means of communications, with solicitations to donate to their Chaburah in Israel. I fiercely turned them down and refused to donate money.
My opinion is that these so-called learning Chaburahs are undermining the yeshivos gedolos and beis medresh programs here in the US. Also, these Chaburahs, where innocent get caught up with, are hotbeds for an infinity of hefkairus.
When an American boy turns 18 years old, he has nowhere to go. Many have tried to open programs but have failed due to the fact that most boys leave for Israel, hence leaving the local programs unable to operate and without boys. As a parent who will eventually have a boy who will need to be in some program when he turns 18 years old, I will not give money, thus shooting myself in the foot, and donate to programs that have caused and will cause local yeshivos to close down.
(Disclaimer: The following messages are regarding boys who go to these so-called Chaburahs and not for those who actually attend The Mir or any other legit yeshiva).
Why not send an 18-year-old to Israel?
Wake up America, by asking this question you are either in a state of denial or hallucinating.
Do you know that these Chaburahs are on break with no accountability every weekend from Thursday night until Monday morning?
As a parent do you know where your son is spending Shabbos?
Do you know that your 18-year-old is spending his Shabbos at a Kibbutz?
How about In Eilat? Or flying unsupervised to Europe?
How many of them go to Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt?
Do you know that these Rosh Chaburahs have little to no idea what your son is doing?
Attendance at these Chaburahs are minimal past the first two weeks of the Zman?
Do you know about the Tefilin reminder texts going out every day reminding of when Shkiah is so that they remember to do Tefilin?
What about substance abuse?
What about sleeping all day?
The list goes on and on….
Therefore, if you are a parent who has a son who is 18-19 years old and are thinking I’ll send him to a Chaburah in Israel so that he should learn, don’t be fooled, he won’t be doing anything productive.
