7 Health Benefits of Tomatoes
Turns out the humble tomato is full of surprising perks for your skin, your gut, and more.

By Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD Updated August 02, 2018

https://www.health.com/nutrition/health ... s-tomatoes
In case you were wondering, a tomato is a technically a fruit, because it’s seed-bearing and develops from the ovary of a flowering plant. (Botanically speaking, vegetables consist of other plant parts, like roots, leaves, and stems.) But when it comes to nutrition, tomatoes —along with seedy cucumbers and zucchini—are categorized as vegetables. That's due in part to their lower carb and sugar contents: A medium tomato provides just 22 calories, and about 5 grams of total carb, with 3 as sugar and 1.5 as fiber. But this low-calorie, low-carb package is chock-full of nutrients, and has been linked to a variety of health benefits. Here are seven, along with some simple ways to incorporate more tomatoes into your everyday meals and snacks.

Tomatoes are a great source of vitamins
A single tomato can provide about 40% of the daily recommended minimum of vitamin C. What's more, tomatoes supply vitamin A, which supports immunity, vision, and skin health; vitamin K, which is good for your bones; and potassium, a key nutrient for heart function, muscle contractions, and maintaining a healthy blood pressure and fluid balance.

From Sephora
They protect heart health
Tomatoes contain an antioxidant called lycopene, which is responsible for their red color. Research suggests that in terms of heart health benefits, it's more effective to eat tomatoes and tomato products than take lycopene supplements. Other studies have shown that higher blood levels of lycopene are tied to lower death rates for people with metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors that raise the chances of developing heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

Improve you vision
Lycopene is also good for your eyes. And that's not the only peeper-protective nutrient in tomatoes; they contain lutein and beta-carotene as well. According to research, those nutrients support vision and protect against eye conditions including cataracts and macular degeneration.

Boost digestive health
The fluid and fiber in tomatoes may be helpful if you're prone to constipation. (According to the USDA one large tomato contains 6 ounces of fluid, and 1.5 grams of fiber.) Just be aware that in some people, the acidity from cooked tomatoes may trigger or worsen acid reflux and indigestion.

Help with diabetes management
Tomatoes may be a protective food for people with type 2 diabetes: In one study, people with diabetes who supplemented with cooked tomatoes for 30 days experienced a decrease in lipid peroxidation, a chain reaction in which substances called free radicals attack fat, leading to damage that ups the risk of heart disease. This is particularly important, because diabetes doubles the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Guard skin health
A 2011 study found that the combination of tomato paste and olive oil protected against sun damage, and boosted the production of pro-collagen, a molecule that gives the skin its structure and keeps it firm and youthful. Scientists believe that the lycopene in tomatoes is key. It’s at its highest concentration when tomatoes have been cooked, and olive oil boosts its absorption from your digestive system into your bloodstream.

Protect against cancer
Observational studies have found links between the superstar compound lycopene and fewer incidences of prostate, ovarian, lung, and stomach cancers.

How to reap all the perks of tomatoes
Your can incorporate tomatoes into your diet in a number of forms—fresh, dried, or as sauce, salsa, or paste. This also allows you to enjoy tomatoes year-round.

Add fresh tomatoes to omelets and salads, and serve them sliced, drizzled with balsamic and garnished with fresh basil, sea salt, and cracked black pepper. Dress fresh greens or steamed veggies with sundried tomato pesto, or drizzle it over broiled fish. Toss spaghetti squash or beans with tomato sauce, or use it as a topping for sautéed green beans or potatoes. Add salsa to scrambled eggs or taco salad, or spoon onto cooked fish, black beans, or brown rice. Use tomato paste in veggie chili, or mix it into hummus, along with roasted garlic and harissa. Bon appétit.

Everything you need to know about tomatoes
Benefits
Nutrition
Diet
Risks
A tomato is a nutrient-dense superfood that offers benefit to a range of bodily systems. Its nutritional content supports healthful skin, weight loss, and heart health.

Despite the popularity of tomatoes, it was only 200 years ago that they were thought to be poisonous in the United States (U.S.) This is likely to be because the plant belongs to the toxic nightshade family.

Tomatoes are now the fourth most popular fresh-market vegetable behind potatoes, lettuce, and onions. This article will examine their powerful health benefits, nutritional content, ways to include more tomatoes in the diet, and the risks of tomato consumption.

Fast facts on tomatoes
Including tomatoes in the diet can help protect against cancer, maintain healthy blood pressure, and reduce blood glucose in people with diabetes.
Tomatoes contain key carotenoids such as lutein and lycopene. These can protect the eye against light-induced damage.
Eat more tomatoes by adding them to wraps or sandwiches, sauces, or salsas. Alternatively, eat them cooked or stewed, as these preparation methods can boost the availability of key nutrients.
Tomatoes are in the top ten fruits and vegetables for containing levels of pesticide residue. Wash tomatoes before eating.
Benefits
Tomatoes have extremely high nutritional density.

Tomatoes are an intensely nutritious plant food.

The benefits of consuming different types of fruit and vegetable are impressive, and tomatoes are no different. As the proportion of plant foods in the diet increases, the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and cancer decreases.

There are different types and sizes of tomato, and they can be prepared in different ways. These include cherry tomatoes, stewed tomatoes, raw tomatoes, soups, juices, and purees.

The health benefits can vary between types. For example, cherry tomatoes have higher beta-carotene content than regular tomatoes.

High fruit and vegetable intake is also linked to healthy skin and hair, increased energy, and lower weight. Increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables significantly decreases the risk of obesity and overall mortality.

1) Cancer
Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C and other antioxidants. With these components, tomatoes can help combat the formation of free radicals. Free radicals are known to cause cancer.

A recent studyTrusted Source in the journal Molecular Cancer Research linked the intake of high levels of beta-carotene to the prevention of tumor development in prostate cancer.

Tomatoes also contain lycopene. Lycopene is a polyphenol, or plant compound, that has been linked with one type of prostate cancer preventionTrusted Source. It also gives tomatoes their characteristic red color.

Tomato products provide 80 percentTrusted Source of dietary lycopene consumed in the U.S.

A studyTrusted Source of the Japanese population demonstrates that beta-carotene consumption may reduce the risk of colon cancer. Fiber intake from fruits and vegetables is associated with a lowered risk of colorectal cancer.

Diets rich in beta-carotene may play a protective roleTrusted Source against prostate cancer.

Further human-based research is needed to explore the possible roles of lycopene and beta-carotene in preventing or treating cancer.

2) Blood pressure
Maintaining a low sodium intake helps to maintain healthful blood pressure. However, increasing potassium intake may be just as important due to its widening effects on the arteries.

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), fewer than 2 percent of U.S. adults meet the recommended daily potassium intake of 4,700 milligramsTrusted Source (mg).

High potassium and low sodium intake are also associated with a 20 percent reduced risk of dyingTrusted Source from all causes.

3) Heart health
The fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and choline content in tomatoes all support heart health.

An increase in potassium intake, along with a decrease in sodium intake, is the most important dietary changeTrusted Source the average person can make to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.

Tomatoes also contain folate. This helps to balance homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid that results from protein breakdown. It is said to increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The management of homocysteine levels by folate reduces one of the risk factors for heart disease.

Not only is high potassium intake also associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, but it is also known for protecting the musclesTrusted Source against deterioration, preservingTrusted Source bone mineral density, and reducingTrusted Source the production of kidney stones.

4) Diabetes
Studies have shown that people with type 1 diabetes who consume high-fiber diets have lower blood glucose levels, while people with type 2 diabetes may have improved blood sugar, lipids, and insulin levels. One cup of cherry tomatoes provides about 2 gramsTrusted Source (g) of fiber.

The American Diabetes Association recommends consuming around 25 g of fiber per day for women and an estimated 38 g per day for men.

5) Constipation
Eating foods that are high in water content and fiber, such as tomatoes, may help hydration and support normal bowel movements. Tomatoes are often described as a laxative fruit.

Fiber adds bulk to stool and is helpfulTrusted Source for reducing constipation. However, removing fiber from the diet has also demonstrated a positive impact on constipation.

More research is needed to confirm the laxative qualities of tomatoes.

6) Eye health
Tomatoes can help protect the eyes from light damage.
Tomatoes are a rich source of lycopene, lutein, and beta-carotene. These are powerful antioxidants that have been shown to protect the eyesTrusted Source against light-induced damage, the development of cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

The Age-Related Eye Disease StudyTrusted Source (AREDS) recently found that people with high dietary intake of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, both present in tomatoes, had a 35 percent reduction in the risk of neovascular AMD.

7) Skin
Collagen is an essential component of the skin, hair, nails, and connective tissue.

The production of collagen in the body is reliant on vitamin C. A deficiency of vitamin C can lead to scurvy. As vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, a low intake is associated with increased damage from sunlight, pollution, and smoke.

This can leadTrusted Source to wrinkles, sagging skin, blemishes, and other adverse health effects of the skin.

8) Pregnancy
Adequate folate intake is essential before and during pregnancy to protect against neural tube defectsTrusted Source in infants.

Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. It is available in supplements but can also be boosted through dietary measures.

While it is recommended that women who are pregnant take a folic acid supplement, tomatoes are a great source of naturally-occurring folate. This applies equally for women who may become pregnant in the near future.

Nutrition
Tomatoes are packed with nutrients.

One cup of chopped or sliced raw tomatoes containsTrusted Source:

32 calories (kcal)
170.14 g of water
1.58 g of protein
2.2 g of fiber
5.8 g of carbohydrate
0 g cholesterol
Tomatoes also have a wealth of vitamin and mineral content, including:

18 mg of calcium
427 mg of potassium
43 mg of phosphorus
24.7 mg of vitamin C
1499 international units (IU) of vitamin A
Tomatoes also contain a wide array of beneficial nutrients and antioxidants, includingTrusted Source:

alpha-lipoic acid
lycopene
choline
folic acid
beta-carotene
lutein
The cooking of tomatoes appears to increaseTrusted Source the availability of key nutrients, such as the carotenoids lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Stewed tomatoes provide more lutein and zeaxanthin than sun-dried tomatoes and raw cherry tomatoes.

7 Health Benefits of Tomatoes
You might be surprised to learn that the tomato on your kitchen counter is a low-calorie package chock-full of nutrients. To reap the benefits, you can incorporate tomatoes into your diet in a number of ways, such as fresh, dried or as sauce, salsa, or paste.

Try adding fresh tomatoes to omelets and salads, or serve them sliced, drizzled with balsamic vinegar, and garnished with fresh basil, sea salt, and cracked black pepper. Dress steamed veggies with sun-dried tomato pesto, or toss spaghetti squash or beans with tomato sauce. די פרוכט אויף היינט וועט אי"ה זיין:
מעלוינע Watermelon

9 בענעפיטן אויף מעלוינע פון העלט ליין סייט

Top 9 Health Benefits of Eating Watermelon
Watermelon is a delicious and refreshing fruit that’s also good for you.

It contains only 46 calories per cup but is high in vitamin C, vitamin A and many healthy plant compounds.

Here are the top 9 health benefits of eating watermelon.

1. Helps You Hydrate
Drinking water is an important way to keep your body hydrated.

However, eating foods that have a high water content can also help. Interestingly, watermelon is 92% water (1Trusted Source).

What’s more, a high water content is one of the reasons why fruits and vegetables help you feel full.

The combination of water and fiber means you’re eating a good volume of food without a lot of calories.

SUMMARY
Watermelon has a high water content. This makes it hydrating and helps you feel full.
2. Contains Nutrients and Beneficial Plant Compounds
As far as fruits go, watermelon is one of the lowest in calories — only 46 calories per cup (154 grams). That’s lower than even low-sugar fruits such as berries (2).

One cup (154 grams) of watermelon has many other nutrients as well, including these vitamins and minerals:

Vitamin C: 21% of the Reference Daily Intake (RDI)
Vitamin A: 18% of the RDI
Potassium: 5% of the RDI
Magnesium: 4% of the RDI
Vitamins B1, B5 and B6: 3% of the RDI
Watermelon is also high in carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lycopene. Plus, it has citrulline, an important amino acid.

Here’s an overview of watermelon’s most important antioxidants:

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage from free radicals.

Carotenoids
Carotenoids are a class of plant compounds that includes alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, which your body converts to vitamin A.

Lycopene
Lycopene is a type of carotenoid that doesn’t change into vitamin A. This potent antioxidant gives a red color to plant foods such as tomatoes and watermelon and is linked to many health benefits.

Cucurbitacin E
Cucurbitacin E is a plant compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Bitter melon, a relative of watermelon, contains even more cucurbitacin E.

SUMMARY
Watermelon is a low-calorie fruit high in some nutrients, especially carotenoids, vitamin C and cucurbitacin E.

3. Contains Compounds That May Help Prevent Cancer
Researchers have studied lycopene and other individual plant compounds in watermelon for their anti-cancer effects.

Though lycopene intake is associated with a lower risk of some types of cancer, study results are mixed. The strongest link so far seems to be between lycopene and cancers of the digestive system (1Trusted Source).

It appears to reduce cancer risk by lowering insulin-like growth factor (IGF), a protein involved in cell division. High IGF levels are linked to cancer (3Trusted Source).

In addition, cucurbitacin E has been investigated for its ability to inhibit tumor growth (4Trusted Source, 5Trusted Source).

SUMMARY
Some compounds in watermelon, including cucurbitacin E and lycopene, have been studied for their potential to prevent cancer, though study results are mixed.

4. May Improve Heart Health
Heart disease is the number one cause of death worldwide (6Trusted Source).

Lifestyle factors, including diet, may lower your risk of heart attack and stroke by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Several nutrients in watermelon have specific benefits for heart health.

Studies suggest that lycopene may help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. It can also help prevent oxidative damage to cholesterol (1Trusted Source).

According to studies in obese, postmenopausal women and Finnish men, lycopene may also reduce the stiffness and thickness of artery walls (7Trusted Source, 8Trusted Source).

Watermelon also contains citrulline, an amino acid that may increase nitric oxide levels in the body. Nitric oxide helps your blood vessels expand, which lowers blood pressure (9Trusted Source).

Other vitamins and minerals in watermelon are also good for your heart. These include vitamins A, B6, C, magnesium and potassium (1Trusted Source).

SUMMARY
Watermelon has several heart-healthy components, including lycopene, citrulline and other vitamins and minerals.

5. May Lower Inflammation and Oxidative Stress
Inflammation is a key driver of many chronic diseases.

Watermelon may help lower inflammation and oxidative damage, as it’s rich in the anti-inflammatory antioxidants lycopene and vitamin C (1Trusted Source).

In a 2015 study, lab rats were fed watermelon powder to supplement an unhealthy diet. Compared to the control group, they developed lower levels of the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein and less oxidative stress (10Trusted Source).

In an earlier study, humans were given lycopene-rich tomato juice with added vitamin C. Overall, their markers of inflammation went down and antioxidants went up. Watermelon has both lycopene and vitamin C (11Trusted Source).

As an antioxidant, lycopene may also benefit brain health. For example, it may help delay the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (12).

SUMMARY
Lycopene and vitamin C are anti-inflammatory antioxidants found in watermelon. Inflammation is linked to many chronic diseases.

6. May Help Prevent Macular Degeneration
Lycopene is found in several parts of the eye where it helps protect against oxidative damage and inflammation.

It may also prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This is a common eye problem that can cause blindness in older adults (1Trusted Source).

Lycopene’s role as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound may help prevent AMD from developing and getting worse.

For more information on how to keep your eyes healthy, consider reading The 9 Most Important Vitamins for Eye Health.

SUMMARY
Lycopene may help keep eyes healthy and protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) thanks to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
7. May Help Relieve Muscle Soreness
Citrulline, an amino acid in watermelon, may reduce muscle soreness. It’s also available as a supplement.

Interestingly, watermelon juice appears to enhance the absorption of citrulline.

One small study gave athletes plain watermelon juice, watermelon juice mixed with citrulline or a citrulline drink. Both watermelon drinks led to less muscle soreness and quicker heart rate recovery, compared to citrulline on its own (13Trusted Source).

The researchers also conducted a test-tube experiment, investigating the absorption of citrulline. Their findings suggest that citrulline absorption is most effective when it’s consumed as a component of watermelon juice.

Other research has also looked at citrulline’s potential to improve exercise endurance and performance.

So far, citrulline doesn’t seem to improve exercise performance in the amounts studied, but it’s still an area of research interest (14Trusted Source).

SUMMARY
Watermelon juice has some potential as a recovery beverage after exercise. Citrulline may be partially responsible for its effect of easing muscle soreness.

8. Is Good for Skin and Hair
Two vitamins in watermelon — A and C — are important for skin and hair health.

Vitamin C helps your body make collagen, a protein that keeps your skin supple and your hair strong.

Vitamin A is also important for healthy skin since it helps create and repair skin cells. Without enough vitamin A, your skin can look dry and flaky.

Both lycopene and beta-carotene may also help protect your skin from sunburn (15Trusted Source).

SUMMARY
Several nutrients in watermelon are good for your hair and skin. Some help keep skin supple while others protect against sunburn.
9. Can Improve Digestion
Watermelon contains lots of water and a small amount of fiber — both of which are important for healthy digestion.

Fiber can provide bulk for your stool, while water helps keep your digestive tract moving efficiently.

Eating water-rich and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, including watermelon, can be very helpful for promoting normal bowel movements.

SUMMARY
Fiber and water are important for healthy digestion. Watermelon contains both.
The Bottom Line
Watermelon is a surprisingly healthy fruit. It has a high water content and also delivers many other important nutrients, including lycopene and vitamin C.

These nutrients mean that watermelon isn’t only a tasty low-calorie treat — it’s also very good for your health.

What are the health benefits of watermelon?
Benefits
Nutrition
Diet
Risks
Watermelon is a sweet and refreshing low calorie summer snack. It provides hydration and also essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Along with cantaloupe, honeydew, and cucumber, watermelons are a member of the Cucurbitaceae family.

There are five common types of watermelon: seeded, seedless, mini, yellow, and orange.

In this article, learn more about the possible health benefits and nutritional content of watermelon, some tips for serving it, and who should limit it.

Benefits
The water content of watermelon can help a person stay hydrated.
Watermelon is around 90% water, which makes it useful for staying hydrated in the summer. It can also satisfy a sweet tooth with its natural sugars.

Watermelon also contains antioxidants. These substances can help removeTrusted Source molecules known as free radicals, or reactive species, from the body. The body produces free radicals during natural processes, such as metabolism. They can also develop through smoking, air pollution, stress, and other environmental pressures.

If too many free radicals stay in the body, oxidative stress can occur. This can result in cell damage and may lead to a range of diseases, such as cancer and heart disease.

The body can remove some free radicals naturally, but dietary antioxidants support this process.

Below are some of the ways antioxidants and other nutrients in watermelon may help protect a person’s health.

What other foods provide antioxidants? Click here to find out.

Asthma prevention
Some expertsTrusted Source believe that free radicals contribute to the development of asthma. The presence of certain antioxidants in the lungs, including vitamin C, may reduce the risk of having asthma.

Studies have not confirmed that taking vitamin C supplements can help prevent asthma, but a diet that is rich in vitamin C may offer some protection.

A cup of watermelonTrusted Source balls weighing around 154 grams (g) provides 12.5 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C, or between 14% and 16%Trusted Source of a person’s daily needs.

What types of exercise can people do if they have asthma? Find out here.

Blood pressure
In a 2012 study, researchers found that watermelon extract reduced blood pressure in and around the ankles of middle-aged people with obesity and early hypertension. The authors suggested that L-citrulline and L-arginine — two of the antioxidants in watermelon — may improve the function of the arteries.

Lycopene — another antioxidant in watermelon — may help protect against heart disease. A 2017 reviewTrusted Source suggested that it might do this by reducing inflammation linked with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol.

Phytosterols are plant compounds that may help manage low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol. Some guidelinesTrusted Source recommend consuming 2 grams (g) of phytosterols each day. 154 g of watermelon balls provides a small amount, at 3.08 mg.

Reducing LDL cholesterol may help prevent high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the precise impact of phytosterols on CVD remains unclear.

Which foods can help lower blood pressure? Find out here.

Cancer
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) note that free radicals can play a role in the development of some types of cancer. The oxidative stress they cause can result in DNA cell damage.

Dietary antioxidants in watermelon, such as vitamin C, may help prevent cancer by combatting free radicals.

Some studiesTrusted Source have also linked lycopene intake with a lower risk of prostate cancer.

Click here to learn more about the links between cancer and diet.

Digestion and regularity
Watermelon has high water content and also provides some fiber. These nutrients help promote a healthy gut by preventing constipation and promoting regularity of bowel movements.

Hydration
Watermelon is around 90% water and also provides electrolytes, such as potassium. This makes it a healthful choice of snack during the hot summer months.

People can eat watermelon fresh, as juice, or frozen in slices for a tasty cold Popsicle-style snack.

Water is essential for health. Learn more here about why we need it.

Brain and nervous system
Choline is another antioxidant that occurs in watermelon.

It contributesTrusted Source to the following functions and activities:

muscle movement
learning and memory
maintaining the structure of cell membranes
the transmission of nerve impulses
early brain development
One theory suggests that choline may help slow the progression of dementia in Alzheimer’s disease, but there is not enough evidence to confirm this.

What is a brain-boosting diet? Find out here.

Muscle soreness
Watermelon and watermelon juice may reduce muscle soreness and improve recovery time following exercise in athletes.

In a 2017 studyTrusted Source, athletes drank either half a liter of either a placebo or watermelon juice with added L-citrulline, 2 hours before running a half marathon race. Those who consumed the watermelon drink reported less muscle soreness 24–72 hours after the race.

It is unclear whether consuming watermelon juice without added L-citrulline would have the same effect.

People with fibromyalgia experience chronic pain. How can diet help?

Skin
Watermelon contains vitamin C, which the body needsTrusted Source to produce collagen. Collagen is essential for cell structure and immune function. Vitamin C also promotes wound healing.

StudiesTrusted Source suggest that vitamin C may help promote healthy skin, including reducing the risk of age-related damage.

Discover some tips on other skin-friendly foods.

Metabolic syndrome
In 2019, researchers published findingsTrusted Source indicating that watermelon may improve features of metabolic syndrome, including obesity and cardiovascular measures. In the study, 33 people with overweight or obesity consumed either 2 cups of watermelon or low-fat cookies each day for 4 weeks.

The people who ate watermelon reported feeling less hungry and more satisfied for longer than those who ate the cookies.

In addition, after 4 weeks, those who ate watermelon had:

higher levels of antioxidants in their blood
lower body weight and body mass index (BMI)
lower systolic blood pressure
improved waist-to-hip ratio
Those who ate the cookies had higher levels of oxidative stress than the watermelon group. Their blood pressure and body fat also increased.

The results suggest that watermelon may be a good choice of snack for people with obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Can people with diabetes eat watermelon? Find out here.

Diuretic properties
Some people use diuretic drugs to help their body remove excess water and salt. This can be useful for people with kidney problems, high blood pressure, and other conditions.

A 2014 mouse study concluded that watermelon’s diuretic action might be as effective as that of furosemide, which is a well-known diuretic. This could make it a natural option for people with excess fluid. Never stop taking a prescription diuretic without talking to your healthcare provider.

What other natural diuretics are there? Find out here.

Diet
When buying a watermelon, people should look for one that is firm, heavy, and symmetrical without soft spots or bruising.

Tapping the outside can give a clue as to the texture of the fruit inside. Listen for a light and almost hollow sounding thud. This indicates the water and fruit contained is intact and has a stable structure.

Serving tips
Tips for serving watermelon include:

Juice: Place diced watermelon and a few ice cubes in a blender for a cold, refreshing, electrolyte drink that is perfect for rehydrating after exercise or a day in the sun.

Salad: Add watermelon, mint, and fresh mozzarella to a bed of spinach leaves for a tasty and healthful salad. Drizzle with balsamic dressing.

Smoothies: Make a watermelon smoothie or combine with orange juice for extra tang. Remember that juicing breaks down the fiber, making the sugar easier to absorb. People with diabetes should consider eating fresh, whole watermelon rather than drinking juice.

Roasted seeds: Roast the watermelon seeds in an oven for 15 – 20 minutes to make a tasty snack. One ounce (28.5 g) of seeds can provide around 8 g of protein, or 14% – 17%Trusted Source of a person’s daily protein needs.

People should check the packaging of premade juices and candies, as these may have added sugar and may not be as healthful. Eating watermelon whole is the most healthful option.

Cantaloupe is another popular type of melon. Find out more.

Risks
Moderate amounts of watermelon present no serious health risk for most people, but some may need to take care.

Diabetes: Watermelon is a fruit with natural sugar content. People with diabetes must account for these carbs in their daily meal plan. It is better to consume watermelon whole rather than as a juice, as juicing removes the fiber, making the sugar easier for the body to absorb. This may increase the risk of a glucose spike. Remember to watch portion sizes as with all fruit and juices.

Allergy: Some may develop symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling, and difficulty breathing after eating watermelon. If this happens, the person needs medical attention, as it can sometimes lead to anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening condition.

It doesn't get much better than biting into a crisp, juicy watermelon on a hot summer day. These red-fleshed fruits are a staple of barbecues and pool parties for their refreshing taste, hydrating quench, and hand-held convenience. Watermelon can be part of almost any healthy diet—after all, they're low-calorie, allergen-free, and even low-carb. And you might be surprised to learn that, amidst all that water, watermelon offers significant amounts of micronutrients. Then again, eating too much of this summertime favorite can come with some drawbacks. Here are six things that may happen to your body when you eat watermelon. And for more good-for-you foods, check out our list of The 7 Healthiest Foods to Eat Right Now.

1 You'll get hydrated.
watermelon
Shutterstock
Call us Captain Obvious, but watermelon is an extremely hydrating fruit. In fact, since it's made up of 92% water, it's one of the highest-water-content foods on the planet.

While the jury is still out on exactly how much water you need to drink per day (and individual needs vary from person to person), not all of your daily liquids have to come from a glass or bottle. In fact, it can be much tastier to get them from food—like watermelon! Staying hydrated helps prevent fatigue and headaches, flushes waste from the body, and can improve skin tone and elasticity.

You can also get hydrated from these 23 Water-Rich, Hydrating Foods.

2 You may lower the risk of certain cancers.

Ever heard of lycopene? If this sciencey-sounding word seems familiar, it's probably because you've seen it touted as an antioxidant in tomatoes (and ketchup). But tomatoes aren't the only red fruits that pack a punch of lycopene. In fact, research shows that watermelon contains about 40% more lycopene than raw tomatoes.

So what does this mean for your health? As an antioxidant, lycopene helps "clean" your cells of damage, which may help prevent some cancers. According to the National Watermelon Promotion Board, preliminary studies have shown an association between a diet rich in lycopene and a reduced risk of cancers of the breast, prostate, and lung. More research is needed to draw definitive conclusions, but it's safe to say you can feel good if you love to eat watermelon.

Here's Why You Need Antioxidants In Your Diet—And How To Eat More Of Them.

3 You'll boost heart health.

Lycopene's potential doesn't stop there! This powerful antioxidant may also have positive effects on heart health. A 2013 meta-analysis found that high doses of lycopene helped decrease high blood pressure, especially in people with a higher systolic BP. Plus, an amino acid in watermelon called L-citrulline could support cardiovascular health by maintaining healthy blood flow during exercise. And since watermelons are rich in magnesium and low in calories, it's no wonder they're an American Heart Association Heart-Check Certified food.

4 You could recover better from workouts.

Feeling extra sore after hitting the gym? Watermelon to the rescue! A small study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that athletes who drank watermelon juice as an exercise beverage reported less soreness and slower heart rate 24 hours after working out. Researchers believe the L-citrulline in the melons is the ticket to their impact on exercise recovery.

5 You could lose weight.

The so-called Watermelon Diet is a fad we wouldn't recommend—but including watermelon in your diet can definitely aid weight loss. Watermelons are not only extremely hydrating, which helps keep you full, but they're also surprisingly low carb. One cup of balled watermelon contains just 12 grams of carbs. Compare that with grapes or bananas, which have more than double the carbs!

Meanwhile, no one can argue with watermelon's low-calorie count for weight loss. At just 46 calories per cup, you can nosh on a large portion while taking in just a fraction of your daily calorie target.

Looking for other weight loss-friendly fruits? Head to our list of the top 9 Fruits for Weight Loss.

6 You could experience digestive problems.
watermelon
Shutterstock
It's common to eat watermelon as a healthy snack or barbecue side, but too much of it can pose digestive problems–and not from accidentally eating seeds. (Childhood myth busted: you won't sprout a watermelon vine in your belly.) Instead, it's watermelon's water content that might lead to discomfort. Excess fluid in your digestive tract can cause abdominal distention or diarrhea.

For those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, watermelon could be a no-no for another reason. The fruit contains fructans, fructose, and polyols—all of which fall under the umbrella of FODMAPs. These fermentable carbohydrates can be particularly difficult for people with IBS to digest. If you're an IBS sufferer, don't miss our list of high- and low-FODMAP foods.

Watermelon

“Watermelon contains 92% water, is low in calories, loaded with vitamins, minerals and even contains lycopene, a powerful antioxidant known to help prevent certain diseases,” says Eshani. “Eating a diet rich in high volume or high-water foods has been linked to weight loss, as these high water foods full up a person’s stomach causing them to eat less at meals. Many people struggle to get in the recommended amount of water each day, by eating 1 or 2 cups of watermelon, it can help a person meet the recommended amount of fluid per day.”
