The head of a New York City-based nonprofit that directed hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grant money to the Wuhan Institute of Virology is no longer part of a UN-backed commission examining the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.

EcoHealth Alliance president Peter Daszak’s profile on the website of The Lancet COVID-19 Commission has been updated to include the parenthetical quote “recused from Commission work on the origins of the pandemic.” The Daily Mail first reported on Daszak’s recusal Monday.

Earlier this month, Vanity Fair reported that Dazsak helped organize a statement signed by 27 leading scientists that appeared in The Lancet — a prestigious British medical journal — in February 2020. The statement condemned what it called “conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin” and proclaimed “solidarity with all scientists and health professionals in China.”

“Conspiracy theories do nothing but create fear, rumours [sic], and prejudice that jeopardise [sic] our global collaboration in the fight against this virus,” the statement added.

Though the statement initially claimed that the signatories had “no competing interests,” The Lancet issued a statement Monday saying it had invited all 27 signatories (at least one of whom has walked back his support of the natural, or zoonotic, theory) to “re-evaluate their competing interests.” The statement included an updated disclosure from Daszak attached to the February 2020 statement and two other pieces he co-authored or contributed to.

In his expanded disclosure, Daszak stated that EcoHealth’s work in China — including at the Wuhan lab — was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Daszak also denied that he or EcoHealth received money directly from the Chinese government.

“EcoHealth Alliance’s work in China … includes the production of a small number of recombinant bat coronaviruses to analyse [sic] cell entry and other characteristics of bat coronaviruses for which only the genetic sequences are available,” he wrote. “NIH reviewed the planned recombinant virus work and deemed it does not meet the criteria that would warrant further specific review by its Potential Pandemic Pathogen Care and Oversight (P3CO) committee.”

The belated disclosure from The Lancet comes months after the nonprofit group US Right to Know reported that four of the statement’s co-authors had direct ties to EcoHealth Alliance. The Vanity Fair report stated that six signatories had either worked at EcoHealth Alliance or received funding from it.

Two months after The Lancet statement was published, Daszak emailed National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci thanking him for supporting the theory that the coronavirus naturally jumped from animals to humans and did not leak out of the Wuhan lab.

“I just wanted to say a personal thank you on behalf of our staff and collaborators, for publicly standing up and stating that the scientific evidence supports a natural origin for COVID-19 from a bat-to-human spillover, not a lab release from the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” Daszak wrote on April 18, 2020. “From my perspective, your comments are brave, and coming from your trusted voice, will help dispel the myths being spun around the virus’s origins.”

“Many thanks for your kind note,” replied Fauci, who had been told by another email correspondent in late January that the coronavirus may have been “engineered.”

The so-called “lab leak” theory, once dismissed by the mainstream media, has gained traction in recent weeks after a series of revelations — most notably that three researchers at the Wuhan lab were hospitalized with possible COVID symptoms in November 2019, the same period when experts believe the virus was spreading through the 11 million-strong city of Wuhan.

Internal NIH emails obtained by the conservative group Judicial Watch earlier this month show that EcoHealth funneled more than $825,000 in grant money to the Wuhan Institute of Virology over a six-year period ending in fiscal year 2019. In total, the Wuhan lab was to receive $1.5 million between fiscal year 2014 and fiscal year 2025 for its work on bat coronaviruses before the grant was terminated by NIH in April of last year.

Daszak has also been scrutinized over his role as the sole US representative on a World Health Organization fact-finding mission to Wuhan earlier this year. That trip produced a report that said the virus likely emerged from animals and that was panned by governments around the world, as well as the WHO’s own director general.

Despite his position at the center of the scientific response to the pandemic, Daszak has repeatedly declined to speak to reporters or lawmakers about EcoHealth, the initial WHO investigation, his relationship with Fauci, the Wuhan Institute of Virology or other issues.[/spoil]

The Lancet’s editor in chief, Richard Horton, did not respond to repeated requests for comment but, after The BMJ had sent him questions, the Lancet expanded Daszak’s conflicts of interest on the February statement and recused him from working on its task force looking into the pandemic’s origin.1011

The Lancet letter ultimately helped to guide almost a year of reporting, as journalists helped to amplify Daszak’s message and to silence scientific and public debate. “We’re in the midst of the social media misinformation age, and these rumours and conspiracy theories have real consequences,” Daszak told Science.12 Months later in Nature, he again criticised “conspiracies” that the virus could have come from the Wuhan Institute of Virology and complained about “politically motivated organisations” requesting his emails.13

In February, 2020, 27 public health experts co-authored a Correspondence in The Lancet (“Statement in support of the scientists, public health professionals, and medical professionals of China combatting COVID-19”),1 supporting health professionals and physicians in China during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this letter, the authors declared no competing interests. Some readers have questioned the validity of this disclosure, particularly as it relates to one of the authors, Peter Daszak. In line with guidance from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, medical journals ask authors to report financial and non-financial relationships that may be relevant to interpreting the content of their manuscript.2 There may be differences in opinion as to what constitutes a competing interest. Transparent reporting allows readers to make judgments about these interests. Readers, in turn, have their own interests that could influence their evaluation of the work in question. With these facts in mind, The Lancet invited the 27 authors of the letter to re-evaluate their competing interests. David Asher, who worked for former US secretary of state Mike Pompeo, said while China kept a tight grip in its people a cash incentive may be the way to unlock some crucial information.
“How about $15 million to the first scientist out of the Wuhan Institute [of Virology] that defects to the United States or Australia?” Dr Asher told 7:30.
“There’s a way to play the Cold War smart. I got lots of Chinese who I’ve spoken to. They’ve risked their lives probably to talk to us. But they’re willing to do that.
“Just because they have a totalitarian communist state that’s celebrating a 100th anniversary as a party, doesn’t mean that they are impenetrable, doesn’t mean we can’t figure out what happened.”
Dr Asher believes it is possible Covid-19 leaked from a lab.
Dr Asher told a congressional hearing that it is his belief the virus leaked from a lab and “they covered it up”.
“I think this was a lab disaster, a bio meltdown,” he said.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has said the lab leak theory is still a possibility despite its own investigations showing it “extremely unlikely”.
WHO says it is still most likely that the virus came from animals and spread to humans.
China has repeatedly and angrily rejected the lab-leak theory.

House panel holds first hearing on virus origin
The House Committee on Science, Space and Technology on Wednesday held the first congressional hearing on the origins of the virus.

Rep. Bill Foster, the Illinois Democrat who chaired the hearing, said the Chinese government's lack of transparency is not in itself evidence of a lab leak or something more sinister. He cautioned that answers may not be known even after the August report from the administration.

"If epidemiology were easy, we’d have the answer by now," he said in his prepared remarks. "If the intelligence community were in possession of a smoking gun about COVID origins, I believe we’d know about it."

Laboratory accidents "happen" and are "common", the head of the World Health Organisation has said as he called on China to be more transparent about the origins of COVID-19.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there had been a "premature push" to rule out a theory that the virus escaped from a Chinese government lab in Wuhan, where the first human infections were discovered.
His comments appear to contradict a WHO report published in March, which said a laboratory leak was "extremely unlikely".

An unanticipated problem was encountered, check back soon and try again
"I was a lab technician myself, I'm an immunologist," Dr Tedros said. "I have worked in the lab, and lab accidents happen. It's common."
It is important to establish whether a laboratory had any role in the pandemic, he said, appealing to China to be "transparent, open and to cooperate, especially on the information - raw data that we asked for at the early days of the pandemic".
He added: "We need information - direct information on what the situation of this lab was before and at the start of the pandemic.

"If we get full information, we can exclude (the lab connection)."

One of China’s leading experts on biosafety has admitted there are widespread deficiencies in security and maintenance at his nation’s most secretive laboratories working with lethal diseases.

Yuan Zhiming, a deputy director at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the head of its biosafety committee, highlighted serious concerns in an article published eight months ago.

‘Most laboratories lack specialised biosafety managers and engineers,’ he wrote in the Journal Of Biosafety And Biosecurity, confessing that this left part-time researchers to fill the work of ‘skilled staff’ in high-security laboratories.

‘This makes it difficult to identify and mitigate potential safety hazards in facility and equipment operation early enough,’ he added.

Professor Yuan, the most senior Communist Party official in the Wuhan laboratory, was used to hit back last week at ‘malicious’ claims that the pandemic originated in his institute. Yet he wrote ‘the maintenance cost is generally neglected’ in his article last September, adding that due to ‘limited resources’ supposedly secure laboratories ‘run on extremely minimal operational costs – or in some cases, none at all’.

The astonishing admission – in an article headlined ‘Current status and future challenges of high-level biosafety laboratories in China’ – will heighten concerns the novel coronavirus could have leaked from one of two laboratories in Wuhan.

In a second article in the journal, which he co-authored with four colleagues in Wuhan, he accepted ‘the biosafety system needs to be further improved and strengthened’.

Prof Yuan’s laboratory, ten miles from the infamous wildlife market blamed as the source of the outbreak, was designed with French help. It was the first laboratory in China with level 4 status, which are meant to be the most secure in the world. Scientists at the institute discovered that the virus’s genome was 96 per cent similar to one commonly found in bats.

Last month, The Mail on Sunday published a picture from the laboratory showing a broken seal on the door of one of the refrigerators used to hold 1,500 strains of virus.

A second laboratory in the city at the centre of the pandemic’s outbreak late last year – the Wuhan Centre for Disease Control – is also thought to have carried out experiments on animals such as bats to examine transmission of coronaviruses, although it only has level 2 status.

Prof Yuan’s article said ‘several high-level BSLs [biosafety laboratories] have insufficient operational funds for routine yet vital processes’. Last week, the scientist, responding to Donald Trump’s briefing that the US was investigating to see if Covid-19 originated in a Wuhan laboratory, claimed rumours were being ‘pulled out of thin air’.

coronaviruses.
July 4, 2019: The PRC’s Ministry of Science and Technology orders a review of several
grants, including grant no. 2013FY113500. This is the grant which funded the collection of
hundreds of coronaviruses and bat samples from the cave in Yunnan province.
July 16, 2019: The WIV publishes a tender requesting bids to conduct renovation on the
hazardous waste treatment system at the Wuhan National Biosafety Lab (WNBL). The
closing date was July 31st.
Late August/Early September 2019: One or more researchers become accidently infected
with SARS-CoV-2, which was either collected in the Yunnan cave, or the result of gain-offunction research at the WIV. They travel by metro in central Wuhan, spreading the virus.
September 12, 2019: At 12:00am local time, the Wuhan University issues a statement
announcing lab inspections. Between 2:00am and 3:00am, the WIV’s viral sequence and
sample database is taken offline. At 7:09pm, the WIV publishes a tender requesting bids to
provide security services at the WNBL.
September – October 2019: Car traffic at hospitals surrounding the WIV Headquarters, as
well as the shuttle stop for the WNBL, show a stead increase before hitting its highest
levels in 2.5 years. Baidu search terms for COVID-19 related symptoms increase in a
corresponding manner.

Jan. 2, 2020: The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) completes gene sequencing of the
virus, but the CCP does not share the sequence or inform the WHO. PRC aggressively

Jan. 3, 2020: China’s National Health Commission ordered institutions not to publish any
information related to the “unknown disease” and ordered labs to transfer samples to CCP

request of PRC researchers.
July 5, 2021: Daszak and 23 of the original 27 authors release an update to their February

French Olympic silver medal–winning pentathlete Elodie Clouvel and her boyfriend fell ill after taking part in the Wuhan games. Asked on local TV channel Television Loire 7 on March 25 if she was worried about the prospect of potentially having to spend the summer in Japan for the Olympics, Clouvel said, “No because I think that with [Valentin Belaud, her partner] we have already had the coronavirus, well the COVID-19.”

Clouvel, 31, went on to explain: “We were in Wuhan for the World Military Games at the end of October. And afterwards, we all fell ill. Valentin missed three days of training. Me, I was sick too … I had things I had never had before. We weren’t particularly worried because no one was talking about it yet.”

She added, “A lot of athletes at the World Military Games were very ill. We were recently in touch with a military doctor who told us, ‘I think you had it because a lot of people from this delegation were ill.’”

Scores of athletes from other nations who participated in the games reported symptoms consistent with COVID-19 upon their return to their home countries.

Renowned Italian fencer Matteo Tagliariol told Corriere della Sera newspaper that he fell ill almost immediately after his return from Wuhan:

“When we arrived in Wuhan we almost all got sick,” said Tagliariol. “But the worst was the return home. After a week I had a very high fever, I felt that I wasn’t breathing,” added Tagiariol, 37. “The sickness didn’t even go away with antibiotics, I recovered after three weeks and remained debilitated for a long time. Then my son and my partner got sick. When they started talking about the virus, I said to myself: I got it too.

Shortly after the WIV took its public virus database off the internet in September 2019, the lab announced a contract competition to renovate its air conditioning system for approximately $606 million. The announcement was later redacted from the Chinese Ministry of Finance website, Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin first noted.

“A defective hazardous waste treatment system and central air conditioning system would increase the likelihood of a lab employee (or several) becoming infected with SARS-CoV-2, as viral particles would be more likely to remain in the air for longer periods of time,” the memo read.

"I was very rapidly sidelined, threatened," said Redfield, "because somehow I believed as a virologist that this virus may have come from the laboratory."

Redfield said there was "growing evidence" to back the claim that the disease accidentally originated from a laboratory leak, "so I continue to believe of the two hypotheses that the laboratory leak is the most likely origin of this virus.

Redfield led the CDC under former President Donald Trump's administration between 2018 to 2021 and told Vanity Fair in June that he was targeted by scientists over his theory.

"It's in a way tragic because you would then say this pandemic was caused in a way by science, not necessarily by nature," he told Fox News. Newsweek has contacted the CDC for comment.

Live bats were kept in cages inside the Wuhan Institute of Virology, contradicting the WHO's investigations into the origins of Covid-19.

As G7 countries increase calls for a "phase two" investigation into the origins of Covid-19, new footage has revealed that live bats were kept in cages inside the Wuhan Institute of Virology – despite claims from the World Health Organisation (WHO) that such a possibility was a "conspiracy".

The infamous lab is at the centre of a theory – first spruiked by the likes of Donald Trump and Mike Pompeo – that Covid-19 wasn't, as many scientists believe, transmitted from bats to people via an unknown intermediary, but was instead leaked, intentionally or not, from the institute.

A joint WHO/China investigation into the origins of the disease first worked to dispel this line of thinking, calling the chance of a laboratory leak "extremely unlikely" and the idea that bats were held at the institute "an error".


"No BATS were sent to Wuhan lab for genetic analysis of viruses collected in the field. That's not how this science works. We collect bat samples, send them to the lab. We RELEASE bats where we catch them," a member of the WHO team, zoologist Dr Peter Daszak, wrote in a December tweet.

"This is a widely circulated conspiracy theory. This piece describes work I'm the lead on and labs I've collaborated with for 15 years," he wrote in another.

"They DO NOT have live or dead bats in them. There is no evidence anywhere that this happened. It's an error I hope will be corrected."

But an official May 2017 video from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, obtained by Sky News, shows bats held in a cage at the institute four years ago and a scientist feeding a worm to one of the creatures.

Earlier this month, Daszak appeared to walk back his earlier denials, writing on Twitter that the WHO team had not asked the institute if they housed bats.

"We didn't ask them if they had bats. I wouldn't be surprised if, like many other virology labs, they were trying to set up a bat colony," he wrote.

"I know it's happening in labs here and in other countries. You're right, labs in US & around (the) world are trying to keep bats to test viral immune responses etc.

"None are successfully doing this at scale like lab mice & animals are always screened virus-free before expts, (sic) so even if WIV were trying this, it's prob irrelevant for origins."
