Rabbi Is Buried In a Community He Helped Start

MONROE, N.Y., Feb. 12— Four days after being shot in the head by an assailant who stole his car and fled, Rabbi Chaskel Werzberger was buried here today in a community he helped found more than a decade ago.

Spilling out the doors of the congregation Yetev Lev synagogue in the community of Kiryas Joel, home to thousands of Satmar Hasidic Jews about 35 miles northwest of New York City, several thousand mourners wept and prayed for a man they said they had loved.

Assistant to Chief Rabbi

''He carried people from the cradle to the grave,'' said Goldie Weiss, who was standing with a group of women. ''If a child was born, he was there. If someone got married, he was there to partake in the ceremony. If someone died, he was there to partake in the ceremony.''

Rabbi Werzberger, a 58-year-old survivor of Auschwitz who came here as a teen-ager, was a chief assistant to Grand Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum, spiritual leader of 25,000 Satmars in Brooklyn, as well as in upstate New York and in Europe.

The ultra-Orthodox Satmars adhere strictly to customs like arranged marriages and the separation of the sexes. The largest group lives in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, where Rabbi Werzberger had his apartment. The community here was built more than a decade ago.

The police in New York said that before dawn last Thursday, as the rabbi left his apartment at 130 Clymer Avenue, he opened his car door to drive to the Congregation Yetev Lev D'Satmar and an assailant confronted him. After Rabbi Werzberger had managed to wrestle the door shut, the attacker shot him through the window, striking him above his right eye. The assailant dumped the rabbi onto the street, the police said, before speeding away in the car.

Officer Pete Berry said today that the rabbi's car, a 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass, was found on Friday in another Brooklyn neighborhood. The front seat and windshield were splattered with paint, he said, apparently in an effort to cover fingerprints.

Rabbi Werzberger underwent five hours of surgery, but died on Sunday.

The service here was the second of two today. This morning, more than 8,000 people mourned the rabbi at a service in Brooklyn. Then in a motorcade dozens of cars long, they drove here to bury him.

A number of rabbis spoke here, including Aaron Teitelbaum, the oldest son of the Chief Rabbi, who wept as he recalled Rabbi Werzberger. Among the other speakers were Rabbis Getzel Berkowitz and Joel Morgenstern, both Satmars. Following to Hasidic custom, men were admitted to the service and to the burial; women remained across the street.

Presiding Over Rituals

After the service the people of Kiryas Joel - an enclave surrounded by woods where the men wear traditional black coats, hats and curled sideburns and the women use modest dresses -could talk of little but Rabbi Werzberger. Although he lived in Brooklyn, the people said, he continued to spend a lot of time here, and mourners said he was always willing to make the drive if he was needed.

They remembered him as the man who presided over most of their weddings and their funerals and who made sure that they lived according to religious principles.

''He helped us very much morally,'' Mrs. Weiss said. ''He kept up our strength in our religion. And when he reprimanded, it was in a gentle, loving way.''

Without Rabbi Werzberger to officiate at the funeral, it was hard to know where to go or what to do, said Hanna Ester Tyrnauer, a mourner. ''He was the organizer, the director,'' she said. ''There was nobody to direct the funeral.

''His faith was warmth, love, sincerity. He didn't care about himself. He cared about humanity.''

'We've Lost Our Heart'

With her face red and puffy and her eyes moist, Miriam Zelcer described Rabbi Werzberger, who, she said, had lost most of his 18-member family to the Holocaust, as happy, exuberant and full of love. ''He was big and strong,'' she said. ''He had a great appetite. And he was lovable.''

Walking along her block, one of the several strips of modest detached houses, Deborah Schwartz said: ''He never had an enemy in his life. He gave his heart away to everyone.''

''We've lost our heart,'' Mrs. Weiss said. ''No one can stop crying. Even the small children knew him. And everyone called him if they had a problem.''

A woman talking with her who asked that her name not be used, said that she remembered the rabbi singing. ''At every marriage he sang so loud that his voice rang down the street,'' the woman said. ''Everybody feels their father, their friend, their rabbi has died.''

Mrs. Schwartz said as her voice trailed off, ''To survive the Holocaust, and then to be shot in the streets of New York . . . ''

Popular Friend of Many

Rabbi Werzberger was chief sexton, or principal administrator, of Yetev Lev D'Satmar at 152 Rodney Street, where his funeral was held. He was also senior assistant to Rabbi Teitelbaum.

The close-knit group gives Williamsburg an Old World shtetl-like atmosphere.

Isaac Abraham, a spokesman for the Satmars who had known Rabbi Werzberger for 36 years, called him an extraordinarily popular man who befriended and helped countless people.

''The guy was happy at your weddings and had tears in his eyes at funerals,'' Mr. Abraham recalled. ''He was part of your family, whatever you did. It was not show. It was with feeliing and heart. From cradle to grave, he served his fellow members.''

Escape From Auschwitz

Mr. Abraham said Rabbi Werzberger was born in Dasch, Hungary, in 1932 and was captured by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz at the age of 11 in 1943, along with nine other members of his family. Mr. Abraham said that rabbi had told him that seven relatives had died at Auschwitz. But, he said, young Chaskel and two brothers, Mendel and Berel, managed to escape on a train amid the confusion of the final stages of the war in 1945.

The brothers made their way here and were taken in by an uncle in Brooklyn, Abraham Werzberger. They attended yeshiva and began new lives. Mendel died a few years ago, Mr. Abraham said, and Berel lives in Toronto.

Chaskel married and became a rabbi and eventually a Satmar leader. He and his wife, Rifka, had two sons and four daughters, who live here and in Brooklyn.

''He helped newcomers,'' Mr. Abraham said. ''He helped senior citizens. He helped everybody. He was devoted to the congregation.''

Hasidic Rabbi Shot in Head As Attacker Steals His Car

A leading rabbi in a Brooklyn Hasidic sect was shot in the head and critically wounded before dawn yesterday by a man who stole his car, the police said.

The assailant attacked the 58-year-old rabbi, Chaskel Werzberger, at 5:45 A.M. as he was getting into his 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass across the street from his apartment at 130 Clymer Avenue, in the Williamsburg section, the police said. Rabbi Werzberger was the sexton, one of several assistants to the grand rabbi, at Congregation Yetev Lev D'Satmar in Williamsburg.

Dressed in the black garb of Hasidic Jews, the rabbi struggled to close the car door as his attacker pulled from the other side, Chief of Detectives Joseph R. Borrelli said. Rabbi Werzberger managed to close the door, but the assailant took out a revolver and fired through the closed window, hitting the rabbi above the right eye, Chief Borrelli said.

Victim Dumped on Street

The gunman then dragged the rabbi out of the car, dumped him on the street, got into the front seat and drove away, the police said. Last night the police were still searching for the Oldsmobile; no one had been arrested in the shooting.

Chaim Kornbluh, a paramedic, arrived in an ambulance minutes after the shooting. ''He had a pulse,'' Mr. Kornbluh said. ''He was gasping for air.''

Rabbi Werzberger was taken to the Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan, where he underwent five hours of surgery, said a hospital spokeswoman, Karen Crowe.

At 10 P.M., a hospital administrator said the rabbi's condition remained critical.

Foiled Robbery Reported

Chief Borrelli said a witness had seen two men try to rob another Hasidic man, believed to be a diamond merchant on his way to an airport, in a car on the same block minutes before the attack on the rabbi. The merchant, who was not immediately identified, escaped in his car.

A second witness saw one of the men involved in the first attack struggling with Rabbi Werzberger moments before the shooting, Chief Borrelli said. Detectives were investigating the possibility that the gunman had stolen the rabbi's car to pursue the merchant.

A survivor of the Auschwitz death camp, Rabbi Werzberger came to the United States after World War II.

He has served the closely knit, conservative Satmar community for more than 25 years, friends and relatives said.

Yesterday dozens of stunned members of the sect converged at the spot where the rabbi was shot, outside the Independence Towers Houses. Some recounted how he had presided at their marriages, celebrated births in their families and officiated at funerals. Others carefully wiped his blood from the street with clean towels.

'Always Ready to Help'

''It shakes us all up,'' said a friend, Rabbi Hertz Frankel. ''He was always ready to help people, on a 24-hour basis. He was a one-man Human Resources Administration.''

A member of the congregation, Paul Mertz, said Rabbi Werzberger, who spent 10 hours a day at the Yetev Lev synogogue, had officiated at his wedding and helped deliver his children and had given his grandmother spiritual counsel on her deathbed.

''There isn't one person in this entire community he hasn't touched,'' Mr. Mertz said

Suspect Arrested in Rabbi's Slaying

A 35-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested on Monday and charged with the slaying of a leader of the Satmar Hasidim in February in the Williamsburg section of the borough, Police Commissioner Lee P. Brown said yesterday.

He made the announcement at a news conference at the 90th Precinct station house, where relatives and friends of the victim, Rabbi Chaskel Werzberger, crowded in a room. Most of them wore the black hats and fringed prayer shawls of the 25,000-member sect.

Mr. Brown said the suspect, David Ranta, an unemployed house painter, was the gunman in the killing. The police said another man might have also been involved. Mr. Ranta, a former convict with a long criminal record, was arrested on 73d Street, near his house on 81st Street, in the Bensonhurst section, Mr. Brown said.

After the conference, some residents of the area said they were relieved that there was a suspect. ''It makes me feel good,'' the owner of a store on Lee Avenue said, speaking on condition of anonymity. ''They should hang him up in the middle of the street. They should build a pole. Everybody will give money to build the pole. Even if the person is a Jew, that is our feeling toward him.''

Accounts From Witnesses

Rabbi Werzberger, 58 years old, a survivor of the Auschwitz death camp. is still widely mourned. ''He was so well loved around here that you miss him, even if you were not part of that congregation,'' said a woman managing a candy store on Lee Avenue.

Rabbi Werzberger was the sexton, an assistant to the grand rabbi, at Congregation Yetev Lev D'Satmar.

The arrest was made after more than six months of old-fashioned detective work, Mr. Brown said. The accounts of witnesses to the shooting, at 5:45 A.M. on Feb. 8, helped the police track the suspect, other officials said.

Rabbi Werzberger had just left his apartment in a public housing complex at 130 Clymer Street and was opening his car door when he was attacked, the police said. He managed to close the door and enter the car, but the gunman, who had apparently tried to rob another man in the apartment building, shot him through the window, the police added. A bullet struck Rabbi Werzberger above the right eye. The assailant pushed the rabbi out of the car and sped away, the police said.

His car, a 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass, was found in another neighborhood. Paint was splattered on the front seat and windshield, apparently in an effort to conceal fingerprints, the police said in Februrary.

Rabbi Werzberger, a native of Hungary, died three days after the attack. His funeral at Kiryas Joel, a community he helped found in the 70's near Monroe, N.Y., drew several thousand mourners.

Mr. Ranta faces charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a deadly weapon, said a spokesman for the police, Capt. Stephen P. Davis. Mr. Ranta's criminal record includes 15 or 16 arrests on various charges and prison time for robbery, Mr. Brown said.

No weapon was recovered. Captain Davis said the police believed a .44- or .45-caliber gun had been used. Mr. Ranta, a thin blond mustachioed man who was wearing a football T-shirt and ripped jeans as he was whisked from the station house to a police car, made no statements ''of any substance,'' Captain Davis said. Hasidim shouted at the suspect and pounded on the car as it passed.

A neighborhood resident, Shulem Landau, said the man who had almost been robbed before the rabbi had fled by hurling himself and his cart with diamonds into his car and driving off. ''The rabbi was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,'' Mr. Landau said.

A jury convicted an unemployed house painter yesterday in the killing last year of Rabbi Chaskel Werzberger, a leader of the Satmar Hasidic community in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.

The 37-year-old defendant, David Ranta of Brooklyn, could face 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on June 10 by Justice Francis X. Egitto, who conducted the trial in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn. Botched Robbery

Rabbi Werzberger, 58, was a sexton, or chief assistant, to the grand rabbi at Congregation Yetev Lev D'Satmar. The rabbi, a native of Hungary and a survivor of the Auschwitz death camp, came to the United States after World War II.

He was shot about 5:45 A.M. on Feb. 8, 1990, in front of his apartment in Williamsburg. His assailant fired one shot through the passenger side of the car, opened the door, shoved the rabbi's body onto the street and then sped off in the rabbi's 1985 Oldsmobile Cutless.

The prosecutors, Barry Schreiber and Suzanne Mondo, charged that Mr. Ranta killed Rabbi Werzberger to steal his car while making a getaway after botching the robbery of a jewelry courier.

The defense lawyer, Michael Baum, contended that Mr. Ranta, who was arrested in August, was the wrong man and was charged with the crime to quiet the anger of the Hasidic community over the slaying of the rabbi.

A witnesses for the prosecution, Alan Bloom, testified that he and Mr. Ranta tried to rob Chaim Weinberger, a jewelry courier, who thwarted the robbery by speeding away in his car. He said Mr. Ranta shot the rabbi while making a getaway. Appeal Is Planned

On the second day of deliberations in the three-week trial, the jury convicted Mr. Ranta of attempted robbery, robbery and murder in the commission of a robbery, while acquitting him of an intentional murder charge.

"We think the verdict was just and we are satisfied that justice was done," Mr. Schreiber, said.

Mr. Baum called the verdict unjust and said he would appeal it.
