LESS THAN ONE WEEK FROM TODAY!
In less than one week from today, we will celebrate Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, inaugurating the last three months, or final calendar quarter, of the year. In a financial framework, the last quarter of the year is a time when people begin a review of the year, think about tax planning techniques, and consider what can be to improve the year’s final quarter, so that it ends more successfully, and starts the next year off on the right footing and in a positive mode and direction.. All the more so, of course, should we prepare ourselves for the last quarter of the pivotal year we are living in. We have a week to ponder and reflect—what have we accomplished thus far; where our goals are; what can/should we attain in the coming months. It is no coincidence that as the world slackens off in the summer, we energize ourselves and achieve—for our calendar--and our agenda, is simply very different!

Chazal teach that “Pischu Li Pehsach…”--open for Me an opening the size of the point of a needle, and I will open for you an opening which is the size of the Ulam’s opening in the Beis HaMikdash (the Ulam’s opening was 40 Amos, or at least 60 feet tall and 20 Amos, or at least 30 feet wide). The Kotzker Rebbe comments as follows: Hashem asks of a man to open his heart to the extent of a needle’s point. However, small as this may be, it must still be a needle’s point--needle-sharp--piercing through the material in its entirety. Whatever Teshuva we do must pierce through the very insides of our being--it must penetrate through and through. Hashem, in turn, will help us, so that our Teshuva will become more profound--to the point of an Ulam! We add simply that the opening of the Ulam is not only the largest opening that we can think of--but it is also the largest opening of the Beis HaMikdash. Through sincere Teshuva--we will see the opening of the Ulam in the Beis HaMikdash itself!

A person once remarked to Rav Yitzchok Hutner that the performance of certain mitzvos is too
difficult for him since they run counter to his nature and he is unable to change.
Rav Hutner responded by
likening the man’s argument to the case of a motorist speeding down the highway who suddenly sees
flashing lights in his rear-view mirror. He pulls over, and the policeman approaches and asks why he was
driving 83 mph on a highway with a speed limit of 50.
The man foolishly answers that he did nothing wrong, as the car was set to cruise control and he
wasn’t even the one driving at that speed. The officer dismisses his specious defense by noting that he
was the one to initially set the cruise control to an illegal speed. Similarly, when a person comes before
the Heavenly Court and attempts to justify his ways by noting that certain mitzvos ran counter to his very
essence, he will have a difficult time explaining who was responsible for creating within himself a nature
which runs counter to the Torah.
While every person has different mitzvos that specifically challenge him, the Mishnah in Avos
teach that the strong person is one who conquers his evil inclination (4:1) and that the harder a mitzvah is
for a person, the greater will be his reward for doing it (5:22), a lesson we should learn from the eternal
covenant of peace that Hashem gave to Pinchas for acting counter to his peaceful nature.

By Rav Eli Glaser of Soveya
The famous command to Avraham of, “וגו ךל ךל ',” encapsulates an essential element necessary for personal growth.

“Get out of your comfort zone!”

Avraham was asked to uproot himself from his geographic surroundings, his family ties and daily routine – from everything he knew and to which he was accustomed.

Or was he?

Avraham was chosen to be the founding father of the Jewish nation because he had chosen G-d. He extricated himself from his own comfort zone. He had the courage to stand alone (Ivri). Avraham had the clarity to realize that this world was not about chasing after temporary pleasures and finding the easier, softer way toward success.

Avraham’s relationship with HaShem was not like that of the idol worshippers around him, who treated their gods like a vending machine – attempting to come up with the right combination of offerings to produce their own desired outcome – akin to putting in the correct amount of coins to get the candy bar of choice.

Avraham knew that since there is an Infinite Creator, there is a design and plan for the universe and an Omnipotent Being that is running the show. HaShem is the constant and we are the variable, having to adjust our perceptions, feelings and desires to conform to His will for us – not to rationalize our yearnings into relative truth.

Avraham was the embodiment of chesed (kindness), not because he gave everyone what they wanted, but because he gave people the opportunity to elevate themselves beyond their daily existence.

He simply helped them enjoy the fruits of this world in the context of a greater purpose, not merely to satisfy an immediate desire. “Don’t thank me,” he would tell his guests after feeding them a nourishing meal. “Thank the al-Mighty who is the Real Provider. Have a relationship with Him.”

Eating to live, not living to eat.

Kindness starts at home. We have to show true chesed to ourselves by being willing to challenge ourselves, to break out of our comfort zones of complacency and habit – even if others around us are not. It’s not easy to end life-long behaviors. It’s hard to adopt new ways of thinking and acting. But the degree of difficulty doesn’t determine the validity of something. If it’s the right thing to do, we need to do it whether it’s easy or not.

As with Avraham, HaShem doesn’t give us any test we can’t pass. We already have all the requisite capabilities we need to succeed. We just need the courage to utilize them, and the willingness to break out of our own comfort zones. Then we can experience the true joys and pleasures HaShem puts in this world, and not settle for the “here and now”, which quickly turns into nothing more than the, “been there, done that.”

Good תבש.

Divrey Toiroh for Vayeitzei 5778

From this week’s Sedra we learn an important Halocho. In the general world this saying is known: “For this person I will go the extra mile”. This suggests that in truth one is not expected to do that, but because he feels that this person deserves it or because he likes this person, he will do a special good job.
However this is wrong. In truth Al Pi Toiroh a worker always has to go the extra mile. Actually the Rambam writes in Hilchos Sechirus as follows:
ונבכעי אלו ינע רכש לוזגי אלש ב"העב רהזומש ךרדכ
בייח אלא המרמב םויה לכ איצומו ןאכב טעמו ןאכב טעמ לטביו ב"העב תכאלמ לוזגי אלש רהזומ ינעה ךכ
It is known that the Rambam is not a Mussar Seifer. It is not a Seifer where Inyoney Chasidus and good Minhogim are recorded. Everything that is written in the Rambam is plain Halocho! If the Rambam learns from Yaakov that one has to work for the boss with one’s whole Koiach, then this is Halocho.
Actually we see in the sedra that Yaakov was a Noeh Doiresh and a Noeh Mekayem. In plain English this is translated as : “He practised what he preached”. When Yaakov arrived at the outskirts of Choron he saw the shepherds gathering around the well. He asked them: Where are you from? They answered : From Choron! He asked them : Do you know Lovon? They said : Oh Yes! He asked: Is peace with said : Peace. [Note! They did not say Peace is to him, they just said Peace, the Baal Haturim says that they knew that Lovon was a Rosho, and the Toiroh says אין שלום לרשעים, No peace for the wicked!] But then Yaakov tells them off: Excuse me! Why are you already retiring for the day? Don’t you have a job to do? It is yet high day!!
Now Yaakov himself indeed fulfilled this when he worked for Lovon. Day and night he ensured the safety and prosperity of the flock, even though Lovon abused him.
The Mido of Yaakov is Tiferes. Maybe we can suggest that this is why he was teaching everyone about Bein Odom Lachaveiroi. The Mishna says:
םדאה ןמ ול תראפתו הישועל תראפת איהש לכ ,םדאה ול רוביש הרשי ךרד יהוזיא ,רמוא יבר
So we see that Tiferes = Glory is what is pleasant to other people. The best way to achieve this is by being honest and faithful to other people.
We all know the difficulty of doing Teshuva for Bein Odom Lachaveiroi issues, more than for Bein Odom Lamokom, since we need to make things up with the other person and get Mechila.
There is an interesting Toisfos. On the one hand Chazal tell us that in the Other World we will be questioned by Beis Din Shel Maaloh in this order: ?הנומאב תתנו תאשנ Did you do business in good faith? Did you set times for learning Toiroh? הרותל םיתע תעבק
So it appears that the first judgment is for crooked business. However on the other hand Chazal tell us הרות ירבד לע אלא םדא לש וניד תליחת ןיא the first justice meted out is for Toiroh. How does that fit in with the first question being about business?
Toisfos answers that there is no contradiction! When it comes to interrogation the first question is about business, but when it comes to punishment then the first one is for Toiroh.
My great grandfather Reb Aaron Yaakov Porush ZTL asked that this appears to be illogical. Moh Nafshoch! If the first punishment is for Toiroh, let the first question then be about Toiroh?
He answered with an amazing insight. When one is accused with having run a crooked business, he has to make it up with the people he wronged. Once he has died and came to Beis Din Shel Maalo he can’t sort things out up there. But Hashem in his great mercy allows a person and gives him the opportunity to make things up, this by what is called Gilgul Neshomos. He goes back down and gets born again to be able and make amends.
So the first thing the Beis Din shel Maaloh has to establish is whether this man has unfinished business down below, therefore they ask him: was your business straight? Was your Bein Odom Lachaveiroi clean? If the answer is no, then Beis Din says Sorry! You have to go back down to sort things out! You are not yet ready for the justice in the Other World. However if the answer is Yes, then Beis Din Shel Maaloh says: If so then we can do business up here with you, and then the first question for justice up there is indeed How was your Toiroh learning!
The Zaida suggested that this may be an explanation in these pesukim: ?ושדק םוקמב םוקי ימו 'ה רהב הלעי ימ Who will go up and stay up there? בבל רבו םיפכ יקנ Someone who is clean in business!
There is a Remez Alef Beis Gimmel Dalet, Emunoh – Berocho, Gezeilo – Dalus, if one is honest ,he gets Berocho, and if Cholilo one steals, that brings poverty.
We see this in the final words of the Rambam mentioned above: הזה םלועב ףא תאז רכש לטנ ךכיפל since Yaakoiv was so honest in his work he took a reward even in this world.
May Hashem give us Berocho Vehatzlocho Vechol Tuv Selo and may we witness the Ge’ulo Sheleimo soon

DEVAR TOIROH FOR SHOVUOS 5788
Menachem Shulem Porush

The Medrash says that when Hashem wanted to give the Toiroh to Klal Yisroel, he asked: Please give me guarantors. So the Yieden answered: Our ancestors, Avrohom Yitzchok and Yaakov are our guarantors! Hashem was not satisfied and he said: They are not reliable, I have criticisms on them. Then the Yieden said: Our Neviyim are our guarantors! Hashem still was not satisfied. He said: They are not reliable, I have issues with them. Then they said: Boneinu Areivim Lonu! Our children are our guarantors! Then Hashem said: Yes! They are good guarantors on which I can rely, and he gave us the Toiroh.
What is the Peshat in this remarkable Medrash? It reminds of a story: There was a young man who had a daughter who was ready for a Shiduch. He goes to a Yeshiva and sees a nice Bochur. Then he goes to the Rosh Yeshiva and asks him: How is this Bochur in learning? The Rosh Yeshiva says: I am guarantor! The father felt confident and went to speak to the Bochur. However as he asked him a few questions, he saw that the Bochur was an Am Ho’oretz! He returned to the Rosh Yeshiva and demanded an explanation. He answered: all I said was that I am guarantor. What is a guarantor? If one borrows money and can’t pay back, then the lender goes to the guarantor and the guarantor has to pay. So if the Bochur can’t answer your questions, just ask me and I will answer them!
If so what can the Arvus, the guarantee mean in the Medrash?
Maybe we can explain as follows: Hashem has a most precious item, the Toiroh that is Yokor Mizohov Umipoz, and he wants to give it to his beloved nation, to Klal Yisroel. But he wants assurance that we will keep it properly. So he asks: Klal Yisroel! I want to give you the Toiroh! Can you guarantee that you will keep the Toiroh properly? Klal yisroel replies: Hashem! What do you mean? Don’t you know we come from good stock? We come from the Ovos Hakedoishim! Isn’t that enough guarantee that we will surely stay on the right path? Hashem says: No! That isn’t good enough! Even the Ovos were not hundred percent reliable. Then the yieden said: Ok! Maybe we will have Nisyoinos and start to get off the path, but we have our Neviyim who will surely ensure that we stay on the straight and narrow! Said Hashem: Even that is not guarantee enough! The Neviyim themselves are not always reliable to fulfil their task properly! Then Klal Yisroel said: Our children are our guarantee, we want surely that the Toiroh should be the eternal heritage of our children and our further generations! Says Hashem: Yes! That is a good guarantee! Because being a role model is the only way to ensure that Toiroh carries on with the children. If children see that Toiroh is precious to the parents, then they will want to emulate the parents’ ways and also keep the Toiroh! So the fact that the parents want the Toiroh to carry on the future generations is a guarantee for Hashem that they themselves will keep the Toiroh, because that is the only way to ensure the future.

Kavanah When Saying The Shem Hashem

I am a Lakewood yungerman with a mishpachah. Many of your readers have been davening for me, and the tefillos of so many people surely played a big part in the success of my surgery and will b’ezras Hashem continue supporting me through the ongoing treatments.

With the encouragement of leading Gedolim, I have been trying to create an awareness of the importance and power of saying the Shem Hashem with the proper kavanah. We say the Shem Hashem hundreds of times every day. The halachah is clear that it is assur to say the Shem Hashem without at least the bare minimum kavanah of Adon hakol — that Hashem is the Master of all. According to the psak of Hagaon Harav Moshe Feinstein, zt”l (Ig”m O”Ch 5:5:2), being aware that you are saying the Shem Hashem may be enough to avoid the issur.

The Rishonim and Acharonim (see Ohr Zorua 103, Levush 98:2, Peleh Yoetz — kavanah) say that although it may be beyond our capabilities to have full kavanah 100 percent of the time, this does not absolve us from putting forth the effort to be mechaven as much as we are able. The Gedolim I asked agreed that any small improvement in saying shem Shamayim bikavanah, even if only once a day, is significant and a reason for great zechuyos.

This relatively easy undertaking is powerful for many reasons:

First and foremost, the fact that this is a serious issur that is so often overlooked gives greater value to any improvement in this area.
When Yidden need something, they turn to the koach hatefillah. Being mechaven in the Shem Hashem during tefillah gives it power; without kavanah, it can’t accomplish.
As a bonus, the Yesod V’shoresh Ho’avodah says that experience shows that if someone focuses on not missing shem Shamayim b’kavanah, he doesn’t let his mind wander, and without effort, he ends up concentrating on the entire tefillah. Anyone can try this and see this himself.

When a Yid is in a difficult situation, he works on strengthening his emunah and bitachon. Saying shem Shamayim b’kavanah, thinking Adon hakol, is an exercise in emunah and bitachon.
The Nefesh Hachaim writes that by focusing on the concept of ein od milvado, one merits tremendous protection, and that, in essence, is the kavanah of Adon hakol.
To top this all off, Hashem promises in the passuk (Shemos 20:21): “bechol hamakom asher azkir es Shemi, avo eilecha u’veirachticha”; like the Ra”n explains in Nedarim (7b), mentioning the Name of Hashem appropriately, brings brachah and wealth.
By living with the awareness that Hashem is Adon hakol, that Hashem runs the world, we are better able to deal with the various “crises,” whether in shidduchim, parnassah, health, or chinuch habanim, etc., and at the same time deserve siyatta diShmaya to resolve these issues.

As a practical eitzah, I suggest that a person accept upon himself to have kavanah when he says the Shem Hashem a specific number of times a day, whatever is realistic and sustainable for him, whether it’s 100, 10, or even just one.

Since I began spreading this message in various forums, thousands of people have transformed their tefillos and their lives, and many have reported special siyatta diShmaya.

My hope is that readers of this letter will take on a kabbalah in this area (possibly as a zechus for a friend or relative in need of a yeshuah). Recordings of drashos that I and others delivered on this topic can be heard on the Choshvei Sh’mo hotline: 718-682-2922 x6x6. Feedback, suggestions, as well as actual kabbalos, can be left also, and would be appreciated.

May this chizuk bring brachos and yeshuos to all of Klal Yisrael.

HaRav Chaim Friedlander, Z’tl (brought in the Sefer Sifsei Chaim) brings a meaningful Tefillah to be recited before entering the streets around us which do not honor or at least follow the same principles that we have been taught. This very same Tefillah can in fact be recited when it is necessary for us to turn to the Internet--which in many cases is essentially bringing the streets into your office or home office. This is the concise and potent Tefillah that he brings: Hineni Holech Begai Tzalmovess Bemakom Mesukan. Hoshieini MiYetzerHora U’MaiChatoim U’MaiAvonos, U’Bifrat [specify here any Chait that may be an issue based upon the circumstances]. HaRav Friedlander then suggests that the following Pasuk from Tehillim (119:37) be added: Ha’avair Einai Mair’os Shav--Bidrachecha Chayeini--Avert my eyes from seeing futility; in Your ways give me life! Hakhel Note: Although we have not yet found anyone who has composed a Tefillah Before Internet Use, our solution above based upon HaRav Friedlander may be a good start. One thing is certain--for one who must use the Internet, Tefillos are definitely in order. There is no better time to add on this ‘prayer before a search’ than the month of Nissan--in which Tefillah played such a vital role not only in the salvation of an individual--but in the salvation of our entire nation!

Shavuos is now less than two weeks away. Since it is one of the Shalosh Regalim, it is a time that we travel to the Bais HaMikdash. It would appear that it is an extremely auspicious time for us to demonstrate how we desire to have the Bais HaMikdash back and bring karbanos as soon as possible. A superb way to demonstrate that desire is by taking the time now to give something extra, a special gift, now to Tzedaka in order to demonstrate your desire to bring Karbanos in the Bais HaMikdash!

Everything that happens is from Hashem],
and has it’s reason.
Our job is to turn
what seems like a mess,
to His message.
